Luminar says Tesla is biggest customer for its lidar sensors

テスラ関連ニュース

Luminar Technologies, a prominent maker of lidar sensors for autonomous vehicles, announced that Tesla was its largest customer in Q1, contributing over 10% of Luminar’s $21 million revenue during that period. Despite CEO Elon Musk’s past criticism of lidar technology as unnecessary and expensive, Tesla’s use of these sensors remains unclear since its vehicles primarily rely on cameras for its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving software.

Photos showing Tesla vehicles with lidar sensors on their roofs circulated online, prompting speculation. However, Tesla denied incorporating lidar into its systems, stating that the sensors were being tested for calibration purposes only.

Musk continues to push towards fully autonomous vehicles and is set to unveil a robotaxi in August. Meanwhile, other companies like GM’s Cruise have scaled back investments in self-driving technologies due to financial and regulatory challenges.

Luminar, despite securing Tesla as a customer, reported a loss of $10.46 million in Q1. The Florida-based company is undergoing restructuring, which includes cutting 20% of its workforce and reducing in-house manufacturing to mitigate losses.
